Accelerated Reader

At Wintergreen Intermediate, Accelerated Reader (AR) is a motivational tool to encourage students to read. After reading an Accelerated Reader (AR) book, your child will take a comprehension test on the computer to determine how well they understood the book. For the number of questions the students answered correctly, they will receive an amount of "AR points." Making a good grade on AR tests is extremely important. Students must make at least a grade of 80% on tests to meet their AR goals. AR books are chosen by students but must be in their personal reading level. AR reading levels are determined by a program called STAR. This is a computer-based test with questions that are answered using reading strategies. The STAR test will be taken in August, January, and June.

Accelerated Reader goals are given to each student for each of the four 9 weeks. The point goal for the first nine weeks will be based on a 7 week time period due to not starting AR until the second week of school. Goals are centered around a students' reading level. Your child will be given a goal of obtaining a certain amount of points while maintaining their reading level goal as well as making at least 80% or above on tests. If your child meets their AR goal by the last day of the nine weeks, they will receive an Accelerated Reader award at our 3rd grade award ceremony.

Students are not allowed to take AR tests at home but are allowed at school between the hours of 7:25 and 2:35. AR reading and testing is a part of our daily routine and can be done multiple times during the day. The library is open at several different times during the school day for your child to return and check out books.
